Vancouver past, present and future

The Museum of Vancouver inspires inquiry into our glorious City. The Museum interprets, presents and archives the continuous and fascinating transformation of Vancouver.

Challenge

The Vancouver Museum underwent an extensive visioning process that changed its strategic direction. The Museum’s future focus would now be exclusively on the city of Vancouver and it would balance content creation between exhibitions and public programs. The Museum engaged in an RFP process to find a suitable firm to rebrand the institution. Kaldor was selected to create a brand strategy, brand identity, Website, indoor and outdoor signage, stationery package, membership and corporate brochures, and e-newsletter and ad templates that bring the new brand to life.

Thinking

Our work began with a brand strategy that aligned the Museum brand with its new vision. We recommended a subtle name change to Museum of Vancouver (MOV) to better describe the new focus and eliminate confusion with other institutions. We then created an identity system with colours and imagery that directly drew from aspects of the brand personality. The wordmark was designed to be used holistically or broken apart into fragments.

Results

Museum staff and the Board of Directors have praised MOV’s new visual identity and brand communications. The Museum was recently awarded Outstanding Achievement for the rebrand by the Canadian Museums Association. The website was one of ten Webby Awards Official Honorees in the Cultural Institutions category, a distinction from the hundreds of submitted sites by the most prestigious interactive award in the world.

Kaldor architected the Website to show the intensity of activity at the institution and allow visitors from anywhere in the world to be able to engage with content and dialogue about the city.
A template was created to communicate the brand across multiple audience touchpoints such as exhibitions, e-newsletters, event invitations and brochures.
